Measurements of nuclear and atomic interactions needed for ion-beam therapy with positron emitters of Carbon and Oxygen

The s533 experiment has been conducted at the FRS in two parts using:

¹²C primary beam @ 475, 380 and 290 MeV/u, Februry 2021 run;

¹⁶O primary beam @ 465, 370 MeV/u, June 2021 run.

Fragments of interest, namely ^10,11,12C and ^15,16O, have been used for two independent measurements: charge-changing cross-sections at S2 and S4; and imaging at S4.

Measurement of Charge-changing cross sections (CCCS)

Targets (with thickness in beam):

Run ^10,11,12C, location S2: 2 small water bottles ? mm each (empty and full); 2 big water bottles 30 mm each (empty and full); BARB carbon 12 mm (stack of 6+6, 'A'+'B' in beam direction, polished side facing each other); BARB carbon 6 mm ('C' polished on in-beam side); Be 4895, 2397 and 1199 mg/cm2; BARB PE 30 mm (stack of 10 + 10 + 10, 'A'+'B'+'C' in beam direction).
Run ^14,15,16O, location S4: RIKEN PE 37 mm; RIKEN carbon 13.7 mm; BARB carbon 12 mm (stack of 6+6, 'A'+'B' in beam direction, polished side facing each other); BARB carbon 6 mm ('C' polished on in-beam side); 2 big water bottles 30 mm each (empty and full); PE 10 mm ('A').
Non-BARB run with Pb beam in march: most probably the same targets as for ^14,15,16O.

Imaging with PET scanner from Groningen

The PET measurement is so far best descibed in presentation on BARB meeting, March 16th 2021, given by Peter Dendooven.

⁶⁸Ge line source with 13 MBq activity, serial number is s/n 26331. Four line sources were borrowed from DKFZ Heidelberg, see certificates and specifications.

Measurement of Bragg Curves

This measurement has been performed by the biophysics colleagues using Water Column. The Water Column is a device of variable thickness, in front and behind of which two Ionisation Chambers (ICs) are placed. The beam is being implanted into the water, where the relative ionization in dependence of range is measured. As a result, the position of the Bragg Peak is known rather precisely (error < 1 mm).
